LIGHT IN THE WAVES (Vol. II)

  • A Friesian woman, raised with the tides, unshaken by the city that never sleeps.
  • Bestselling author Mommsen explores how we find the courage to follow our own path.

From the tides of life to the streets of New York: a journey across seas and generations.

On the island of Föhr, everyone knows Inge Martensen, who is almost 100 years old. Her milestone birthday is set to be celebrated with full honors. But just before the big event, to everyone's surprise, Inge takes off. Along with her great-granddaughter Swantje, she boards a ship bound for New York: she wants to see the Statue of Liberty one more time, just as she did as a young girl when she emigrated all alone in the early 1950s. At that time, life seemed already mapped out for the farmer's daughter from Föhr. Never would she have dreamed that she would one day dance on the 40th floor of a skyscraper overlooking the Hudson, conquer Manhattan with German home cooking, and host John F. Kennedy at a yacht club on Long Island.
During the voyage to New York, Inge shares with her great-granddaughter Swantje the story of her colorful life between continents, between worlds that could not be more different. She also speaks of what truly defines a life lived: the courage to make decisions, but also the regrets about what could have been. With this journey, she hopes to help Swantje find her own path, and finally come to terms with what she has always kept to herself. Because no life comes without secrets ...
