A new decade begins for the families from Cologne, Hamburg and San Remo who are old friends. The 1960s promise progress, prosperity and fun.

Gerda and Heinrich’s gallery in Cologne is doing well. Their daughter Ursula in Hamburg is expecting her first child. She really appreciates her parents’ old friends, Elisabeth and Kurt, offering her and Joachim a home. But these living arrangements are not easy. Elisabeth doesn’t allow the young couple much space, and her husband Kurt tries to escape whenever he can, while she struggles to accept that everyone is going their own way. Ursel and Joachim. Daughter Nina and her husband Vinton. Nina prefers to have her four-year-old daughter taken care of by a nanny rather than by her grandmother. While the next generation searches for its place in the here and now, Elisabeth holds onto the past.

The coexistence of the generations in San Remo is not easy, either, and brings change and partings. Gianni is especially worried about his friend Pips, the pianist in his jazz club, who is confronted by a dark chapter in his past that will change his life far into the future.
